BGCNW Receives $15,000 from Kimberly-Clark Corporation to Strengthen Club Families

Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Family PLUS Program to be Implemented

Mount Kisco, NY (July 15, 2010) – The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester has been selected to serve as one of 20 funded sites for Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Family PLUS (Parents Leading, Uniting, Serving) initiative. As a funded site, the Club has received a generous contribution in the amount of $15,000 from the Family PLUS sponsor, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, to increase its support to Club families.

In total, $300,000 is being awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs sites across the country to provide resources to Club parents and other caregivers on how to increase involvement in their children’s lives, as well as how to take advantage of a network of available services. Family PLUS also incorporates programming and collaborations from other community agencies. This $300,000 is part of a 5-year, $7 million grant from the Kimberly-Clark Corporation to Boys & Girls Clubs of America to underwrite the Family PLUS program.

As part of the Family PLUS program and the Kimberly Clark grant, the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester will host their own Cook-Off event in August. Club members and their families will go head to head in their own cooking stations to compete to make the best dish with the supplies and ingredients given. Dishes will be judged based on presentation, taste and originality. The winning family will take part in the National Boys & Girls Club Cook-Off competition, with the prize being a trip to Disney World.

Brian Skanes, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester, recently traveled to Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national headquarters in Atlanta to learn strategies for helping Club families during a Family PLUS training. "We are delighted to have been selected to participate in the Family PLUS program sponsored by Kimberly-Clark. The program plays an integral role in creating a positive and stable environment for youth and their families," said Skanes.

Family PLUS (www.familyPLUS.bgca.org) is designed to address family needs and provide resources for solutions. The program focuses on five components: Kinship Care, Father Involvement, Economic Opportunity, Outreach Strategies and Family Advocacy Network (FAN Club).

"Kimberly-Clark is dedicated to helping strengthen families at the community level," said Jenny Lewis, vice president of the Kimberly-Clark Foundation. "By providing funding for expanded local family programming, Kimberly-Clark and BGCA will be able to increase parents’ and caregivers’ access to meaningful information to help them parent today’s youth in an increasingly complex environment."
