Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester Receives $50,000 Invest in Kids Grant
Mount Kisco, NY (June 29, 2009) – The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester received a $50,000 Invest in Kids grant from the Westchester County government for its after-school Fun Club program. The goal of the grant is to increase the reading and writing ability of program participants, measured by school performance, physical fitness, and participation in community service projects. Members recently welcomed Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham (D, Katonah) for a visit to their facility in Mt. Kisco.
The Fun Club provides after-school extensive youth development programming for 100 children ages 5-12. Youth obtain learning strategies and character developmental skills, peer and mentor relationships, and drug and alcohol resistance techniques within a safe, structured setting. In addition, the Club's full-service Kisco Kids Café serves hot meals and healthy snacks to Fun Club members, providing valuable nutrition and healthy eating techniques.
"We are extremely fortunate to have gracious supporters like Peter Harckham," said Brian Skanes, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. "The Westchester County government's generous contribution goes a long way in helping us to maintain quality programs like the Fun Club for our 2,500 youth."
The Fun Club meets weekdays from 3:30-6:30PM (Grades K to 5) and 2:30-7:00PM (Grades 6). Activities include arts and crafts, gym, homework help, a computer lab, games, reading, snacks, and more.
