Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester Members Honored for Making a Difference in their Community
Mt. Kisco, NY (November 23, 2009) – Two Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester members, Jazmine Dessaure (of Mt. Kisco) and Anthony Cepin (of Sleepy Hollow), received the Westchester County Youth Board's 2009 Milly Kibrick Youth Recognition Award. The awards were recently presented at the annual reception held on October 21, 2009 at the Davenport Club in New Rochelle.
The aim of the Westchester County Youth Recognition Awards is to recognize high school seniors of the Class of 2009 who have been involved in building a flourishing, strong and compassionate community through individual efforts and actions. Jazmine and Anthony are among ten select students who were recognized by the Westchester County Youth Board for their character and achievements.
"These extraordinary young men and women are role models to today's youth," said County Executive Spano. "Through their work in their communities they have touched the lives of many individuals. This ceremony is Westchester County's way of showing that we care about and honor these youths for their exceptional efforts."
A Club member since age 5, Jazmine Dessaure is president of the Keystone Club and a former president of the Torch Club. She coordinates a step dance competition for teams from Westchester and the Bronx and started the Club's step team, Souljah Steppers. Having benefited from so much of what the Club has to offer, Jazmine is determined to give back. She assisted pre-school teachers for three years and is part of the Wilfred Jennings Summer Leadership Program. She also helps run the Club's SMART Girls program. A senior at Fox Lane High School, Jazmine hopes to pursue a degree in education.
More than six years ago, Anthony Cepin received a flyer about the Boys & Girls Club and decided to try it out. "The Club turned out to be one of the smartest decisions I have made so far," Anthony says. The Club has given him the strength to make new friends, build lasting relationships, and has also been a second home. Anthony is deeply involved with both teaching and leading other students. He has served as a computer specialist, counselor to the Club members in kindergarten and first grade, and helps out during homework sessions. Anthony has also assisted with the Club's various feeding programs, from the weekend backpacks of food to Thanksgiving feasts to the daily Kids Café program. A senior at Sleepy Hollow High School, Anthony plans to pursue a career in sports management.
"Congratulations to Jazmine Dessaure and Anthony Cepin," said Brian Skanes, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. "Jazmine and Anthony have demonstrated exceptional character and compassion for their fellow Club members and community time and time again. Both are extremely deserving of this recognition from the Westchester County Youth Board."
